TRAVEL REPORT. War reporter Robin Ramaekers went to the eastern front line in Ukraine: “I get clammy hands when I realize that we have ended up in the middle of a torture chamber”

In eastern Ukraine, near Bachmoet, heavy thumps and explosions follow each other in quick succession. A stark contrast to the recently liberated Izhum, where empty burial pits, the smell of decomposition and a chilling torture cellar are silent witnesses of the horror that took place there. Our war reporter Robin Ramaekers set out on the eastern frontline and spoke to the residents who decided to stay: “For us who stayed, there are only two options: become insane in your own shrinking world, or survive from day to day. without asking too many questions that you will not find answers to.”
