Transport ban for poultry farms after bird flu in Hedel

Bird flu was diagnosed at a turkey farm in Hedel, Gelderland. All 44,400 turkeys there are being culled. To prevent further spread of the virus, a ban on the transport of poultry within a radius of 10 kilometers applies. This also has consequences for at least two Brabant companies.

Two poultry farms in Elshout and Oudheusden are located in the so-called ten-kilometre zone. A transport ban applies here with immediate effect.

This means that birds and eggs may not be transported from the company. Bird manure, used litter, other animals and animal products may also not be taken away. There are a total of ten other poultry farms in the ten-kilometre zone around Hedel.

Earlier, Twan Engelen of the ZLTO said that a transport ban has a lot of impact for companies. “It creates a lot of uncertainty. It has significant financial consequences for poultry farmers. For example, the price of eggs is being depreciated.”

Other measures
Six other poultry farms are located within a three-kilometre zone. These farms will be screened for bird flu and closely monitored over the next fourteen days for signs of disease that may indicate bird flu.

Since 5 October, a national obligation to keep commercially kept birds has been in effect.
