Transmigrant dies in Zeebrugge port

The accident happened early this morning. The shipping police received a report at 8:30 am that a man had died on a P&O ship, possibly a transmigrant.

A medical doctor and the public prosecutor’s office immediately went to the scene.

Perhaps stuck

“According to the initial findings, it concerns an unidentified man who had entered the port of Zeebrugge and probably tried to board the vessel when containers were loaded on the vessel,” says the spokesperson for the public prosecutor’s office.

“There he must have probably clung to a container, where he fell. It seems that the man then came into contact with the container or the wheels. The man died instantly,” says the parquet.

No identity yet

“The man could not be identified for the time being. All operations will be carried out through the DVI service to proceed to identification.”

“Port operations entail many dangers”, concludes attorney Frank Demeester. “For that reason, the public prosecutor’s office and the police also ensure that people stay out of the port when they are not authorized to be present.”
