Transfer window closed
The Bundesliga transfer window has been closed since Friday at 6 p.m. and almost set a record in spending – the record for transfer income was clearly surpassed and the billion mark was broken for the first time. The 747 million euros that the 18 clubs spent on 319 newcomers this summer are just below the record from the pre-Corona summer of 2019. 304 professionals cost 762.1 million euros at the time, including the former record transfer Lucas Hernández. The proceeds from the sale of the defender to PSG have now helped FC Bayern to bring Harry Kane into the Bundesliga, the first player whose transfer fee has broken the 100 million mark.

Not only Bayern, but also RB Leipzig with Loïs Openda (38.5 million euros) and Union Berlin with Robin Gosens (13 million euros) set their own transfer records. Six of the 50 most expensive Bundesliga signings in history came this summer: Munich’s Min-jae Kim (€50m), Leipzig’s Castello Lukeba (€30m), Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha (€30m) and VfL Wolfsburg’s Lovro Majer (25 million euros).
The fact that some Bundesliga clubs have invested more in the transfer market than ever before in one summer shows that the time for savings as a result of the pandemic is over: FC Bayern spent EUR 155 million, RB Leipzig EUR 152.5 million . – both are first and second in the history of the league – Bayer Leverkusen 80.8 million, Wolfsburg 72.5 million and Union 32 million also reached new highs. If the transfer of João Palhinha to Munich had gone through, a Bundesliga team would have invested more than 200 million euros in new players in a transfer period for the first time.
Bundesliga transfers: Leipzig, Bayern and Eintracht with record earnings
However, these transfer expenses go hand in hand with record earnings across the league: The “Red Bulls” sold Josko Gvardiol, Dominik Szoboszlai and Christopher Nkunku to the Premier League, among others, and achieved €240.7 million with all their departures. In the history of football, only AS Monaco (365 million, 2018), Atlético (316 million, 2019) and Chelsea (264 million, 2023) earned more than Saxony in one summer thanks to player departures. Bayern, with 173.3 million euros, and Eintracht Frankfurt, with 141 million euros, also achieved club-historic record revenues. The late transfer of SGE striker Randal Kolo Muani to PSG catapulted the transfer proceeds of all 18 Bundesliga teams to 1.04 billion euros.
The departure of top players such as the RB professionals, the most expensive Bundesliga transfer of the summer Jude Bellingham, Moussa Diaby, Micky van de Ven, Jesper Lindstrøm, Kolo Muani, Hernández, Ryan Gravenberch or Benjamin Pavard are likely to result in a loss of quality in the German upper house care for. The trend is confirmed by the fact that many Bundesliga clubs are good at creating high market values with talented players, but cannot keep them when financially strong clubs from abroad come knocking. The departures of FC Bayern are an exception to the rule, on the last transfer day the hoped-for reinforcements could no longer be committed.
Eleven clubs have increased their squad value since July 1st, seven of them from the lower half of the table and the “Iron”, who were able to strengthen their team with Champions League millions for the first time. Bayern Munich managed this at a high level by 0.2 percent, which is one of the ten most valuable teams worldwide and with Kane and Kim showed that top players can be enthusiastic about the Bundesliga, as well as Bayer Leverkusen with 3.1 percent, which is the upheaval with flying colours, and Wolfsburg with 0.5 percent.
