VfB Stuttgart: Arrivals and departures in summer 2023
After 15th place in 2021/22, VfB Stuttgart went into relegation last season. Another year with tremors until the end should be avoided at best, but there are still some question marks in the Swabian squad. The most difficult thing at the moment is the short-term farewell to captain Wataru Endo (30), whose transfer to Liverpool FC was announced on Friday. Although the Japanese flushes at least 19 million euros into the coffers of VfB with his move, he also leaves a large gap in defensive midfield and as a leader. Atakan Karazor (26) is the only nominal “six” in Sebastian Hoeneß’ squad, defenders Hiroki Ito (24), Waldemar Anton (27) and Clinton Mola (22) can also play there.
The departure of goalkeeper Florian Müller (25) back to SC Freiburg, for whom he had been on loan between the posts in 2020/21, was more manageable. Because in the successor Alexander Nübel (26) from FC Bayern Munich, the club has high hopes. “He’s definitely an asset – athletically and as a person,” said Coach Hoeneß about the keeper, who was loaned out for a year for a fee of one million euros without an option to buy.
Another dream player was the attacking midfielder Woo-yeong Jeong (23), who was fought over in weeks of negotiations with SC Freiburg. The people of Breisgau are said to have demanded at least 4 million euros, but in the end it was agreed to just under 3 million euros. Another breath of fresh air for the offensive is promised by Brighton loan Deniz Undav (27), youngster Jovan Milosevic (17) and Jamie Leweling (22), who also came on loan from Union Berlin. Undav, with a market value of 10 million euros the fourth most valuable signing in the club’s history, is not available for the time being due to a partial tear in the lateral ligament in the knee.
Undav’s move was also seen as anticipating a possible departure of Serhou Guirassy, 27, who is traded at Ajax Amsterdam and various Premier League clubs. In view of Undav’s longer absence, it is unlikely that VfB will let another top performer go. Guirassy was the top scorer with 14 goals in 28 games last season and was then bought by Stade Rennes for €9m after a previous loan. Also injured recently was newcomer Maximilian Mittelstädt (26), who came from Hertha BSC for 500,000 euros, with a strained inner ligament, but could move back into the squad at the weekend.

There could still be movement in these positions at VfB Stuttgart
After the Endo adoption, Stuttgart should be active again on the transfer market. Daniel Elfadli (26; Magdeburg), in whom HSV is also interested, and Hoffenheim’s Angelo Stiller (22), whom Hoeneß already knows from times together at TSG and FC Bayern II, have recently been traded in the TM rumor mill.

With Konstantinos Mavropanos (25) and Borna Sosa (25), after Endo, two of the three most valuable VfB professionals could still switch by Deadline Day. The Greek defender is set to join West Ham United while Sosa is in advanced talks with Sevilla FC.
The personal details of Chris Richards (23; Crystal Palace), who, like Stiller, has also worked with Hoeneß, and Bashir Humphreys are being discussed as replacements for central defence. After half a year at SC Paderborn, the 20-year-old from the Chelsea youth team could be looking for a loan club again and find one at VfB.
