Trains have been purchased and track renovation between Neuenhaus and Coevorden can begin

The total amount for the reactivation of the 28 kilometer railway line is 54 million euros. Renovating the German part will cost 34 million euros, the Dutch part 20 million euros. The German money is for the stretch of track from Neuenhaus to the Euroterminal in Coevorden. A stretch that currently has a low speed due to the many unguarded level crossings, manual switches and only the necessary security.

Then there is a special stretch of track from the Euroterminal to the connection to the main track near Coevorden. That’s from the Bentheimer Eisenbahn. Including a monumental railway bridge over the Coevorder canal. That bridge may be able to be restored. The local authorities on the German side, the municipality of Coevorden and the province together must find at least 6 million euros for that part.

The last stretch to Coevorden station has been financially closed again. State Secretary Vivianne Heijnen made 10 million euros available, which will allow security to be adjusted and an extra platform to be built in Coevorden for German trains.

The wish of the provincial administrators and that of the Bentheimer Eisenbahn is to continue on the Dutch side to Emmen and on the German side possibly as far as Rheine. But that will take years.

The partly single-track route section to Emmen is ‘almost full.’ So there is a partial doubling of the track on the horizon plus a few extra train sets. And track adjustments and extra trains also apply to continuing to Rheine. This involves many millions of euros that are not yet available. But in 2026 you can also take the train from Emmen to Rheine, although you will have to change twice.
