Marc-André Ter Stegen came one step further on his way back to the goal of FC Barcelona and the German national team. At his club, Ter Stegen is now training with his colleagues.
“Back to work with the other goalkeepers!”, The goalkeeper wrote on Tuesday (01.04.2025) on Instagram and posted several pictures from the training area of FC Barcelona.
Ter Stegen has been on the pitch again since mid -February, but he worked on his comeback alone after months of injury.
Tore the patella tendon
In mid -September 2024, the 32 -year -old goalkeeper suffered a tear of the patella tendon in the right knee. Since then he has been missing from the former national coach Hansi Flick, who stands with the Catalans at the La Liga table and meets Borussia Dortmund in the quarter -finals of the Champions League, and the current national coach.
Julian Nagelsmann recently committed himself to Hoffenheimer Oliver Baumann as number one in the quarter -finals of the Nations League against Italy. However, the national coach always emphasized that Ter Stegen will take the place in the goal of the German national team again. “If he is 100 percent efficient, he will be number one. He would have deserved to play a big tournament. We give him the time”said Nagelsmann.
No forecasts about return to the goal
So far there are no public forecasts when the Mönchengladbacher native will play his next competitive game. The season in the Spanish league ends on May 25th. The final of the Champions League will be held in Munich on May 31.
In the Bavarian capital, the selection of the German Football Association (DFB) will also contest the semi-finals in the Nations League against Portugal on June 4. The final of the Final Four, in which Spain and France is opposed to each other in the other semi -finals, will also be held in Munich on June 8, the game for third place on the same day in Stuttgart.
Never in use at a big tournament
Marc-André Ter Stegen has played 42 international matches so far, his first one in May 2012. However, he has never been used in a big tournament. Manuel Neuer was always preferred, most recently also at the European Championship 2024 in Germany.
Ter Stegen was hit, but avoided public anger and sat down on the bench as number two. After the now 39 -year -old Neuer had declared his resignation, Nagelsmann stuck to Ter Stegen as number one. A little later the patella tendon tore.
