Training as a fish filler in a fish market: a bottleneck profession

The course costs adult education more than 3000 euros per student. Because fish is expensive, and a lot is wasted, especially in the beginning.

The training to become a fish filler lasts one month, with an additional week of internship. The 7 students now are almost certain of a permanent job later. Because fish filleting is a bottleneck profession, a craft that is also disappearing. This year there are 50 vacancies. It is a new course, the only one recognized in the country after the previous one in Ostend was discontinued. It is organized by an adult education centre.

The VDAB reimburses the registration fee for job seekers. The training is still a pilot project. The intention is that it will be available from February onwards.
