Wim Jonk has started his fourth season as head coach of FC Volendam. A few months ago he expressed the intention to stay, but it took until last Saturday before he put his coveted signature under a one-year contract. Why did it take so horribly long?

Upcoming chairman Jan Smit was not at all concerned in the past period that the brand new premier divisionist would suddenly be without a head coach. During the previous season, the singer said that an agreement was near. Three weeks ago, Smit tweeted that the deal had been sealed.

Only the official announcement from the club was delayed afterwards. That fueled all kinds of speculation that there might have been a hitch after all. Jonk referred all those rumors to the realm of fables.
“If our vision is fleshed out differently, I don’t know if I would have stayed longer.”
“We had the intention from the beginning to continue together,” says Jonk. “We started three years ago with a certain vision and it is important that we have everyone on the same page towards the future. We talked about that a lot. I think that is an important key, because if it is implemented differently, I know not if I had stayed longer.”

The discussions were necessary to critically examine whether the dots have been put on the i’s everywhere. Jonk is ambitious and wants to make FC Volendam a stable Eredivisionist in the short term. “We have not been a speedboat, but an oil tanker. We have to make steps faster. We have to meet each other in this” challenge And that’s also a nice process.”
For that reason, Jonk has signed a contract for one season with an option for another season.
