Robin Gielen will also be the trainer of brand new national champion HandbaL Venlo next season. Gielen will sign an agreement for one season in the short term.
Gielen announced this on Monday evening in the L1 program EveningGuests Sports†
Contract extension
Under Gielen, HandbaL Venlo became champion of the Netherlands for the first time in club history last Saturday by beating VOC Amsterdam. Gielen has been at the helm of the women of HandbaL Venlo since 2017. “We have looked at how we are doing, whether the group sees it in me and whether there is still room to continue,” he says about his contract extension.

Coronavirus
Gielen sat at the table at AvondGasten Sport with player Pien de Swart. De Swart had some trouble with her voice after the big party last Saturday. “The championship means a lot to us. We have actually been working towards it for three years, but the corona virus has taken away from us for two years. I think we are rightly champions and have deserved it as a club.” Gielen does not have to think long about the strength of his team. “The team itself, they are not individuals. They really want to work for each other.”
Sports hall
The success of HandbaL Venlo also means that the club is growing. Home base Sports Hall Craneveld is mentioned as a point of improvement for the Venlo club. “You have no facilities to play these kinds of matches, it is unworthy of top sport,” says Gielen. Chairman Benjamin Maas also sees the opportunity to improve the home base. “Together with municipalities, education, other partners and other associations, we must build a top sports hall. That is a very important thing. Personally, I would build a hall in Venlo-South in which you can position yourself as a city, perhaps in combination with the football stadium. .”
For now, HandbaL Venlo will continue to play in Sports Hall Craneveld. It will move to another sports hall for the European matches.
