Just when he is most criticized, coach Henk Wisman puts Ajax player Brian Brobbey in the FC De Aftrap team. The 66-year-old Amsterdammer is charmed by Brobbey, even though he misses the best opportunities. “His efficiency is too low, but that is trainable.”
Wisman is a guest tonight in football talk show De Aftrap. He is sitting at the table with Stanley van Kesteren, talent development employee at the KNVB. Towards the end of the broadcast, guests can always add one player to the team of the week and remove one. Wisman chooses to exchange Telstar striker Zakaria Eddahchouri for Brobbey.
Wisman thinks that the 21-year-old Amsterdammer can do much better than he is currently showing. “As a striker from the Ajax youth academy, you should not train on your weaknesses, but on the good things. That is scoring goals at Brobbey. I think that is what has been lacking.”
Both guests also shed light on the situation at FC Volendam. Wisman promoted the club to the Premier League as a trainer in 2003, while Van Kesteren worked in various positions at the club from the fishing village. “They only want Volendammers in the first team and training here, but that is not realistic in a village of twenty thousand inhabitants,” says Van Kesteren. He contradicts the fact that insufficient talents have broken through in recent years: “There are quite good Volendam football players in professional football.”
Van Kesteren believes that Team Jonk should be given sufficient time to implement their plans. “Something has changed when it comes to identity, but that also has to do with the level at which you perform. Team Jonk has been active for three or four years. They are working from the bottom up and it is hoped that those boys will eventually to get to the first team. That’s the goal.”
