Train traffic was disrupted on Sunday evening between Genk and Landen due to a collision between an empty train and a vehicle at a level crossing in Velm. There are currently no more trains running between Sint-Truiden and Genk, the NMBS has deployed replacement buses.
The incident happened around 6:15 p.m., when a driver wanted to brake in front of the barriers of the level crossing on the Attenhovenweg in Velm. “However, due to the slippery road surface, the car started to skid, causing the car to end up on the track,” Infrabel spokesman Frédéric Petit explains. “The driver had the very good reflex to leave his car immediately. The train, which had no passengers on board, then collided with the unmanned vehicle.”
Fortunately, no one was injured in the accident, although there was a lot of damage. “The car was seriously damaged, and the infrastructure also suffered a lot of damage. It is not yet known whether the train has suffered major damage.”
The NMBS has installed replacement buses between Landen and Genk. It is still unclear when traffic will be cleared.
