After a pilot project, all traffic cameras on Flemish highways always work: anyone driving 129 kilometers per hour or more will therefore always be fined. At the end of August, this will be the case on all Belgian highways. This should benefit road safety, writes De Zondag.
“The cameras will now always work on the Flemish highways and only the technical tolerance of 129 kilometers per hour will apply. In Wallonia, the last four section checks with high tolerance margins will be adjusted in the coming weeks so that all margins on Belgian highways will be reduced to 129 by the end of August. kilometers per hour. Flashing from 129 kilometers per hour will also become the norm when new cameras are activated,” said Edward Lantsheere, spokesman for Justice Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne in De Zondag.
The pilot project, which was started in October last year, was intended to determine whether the police and the public prosecutor’s office can cope with the increased influx of files if tolerance margins or quotas are not applied. In places with tolerance margins, flash was only used at a speed of 141 or 147 kilometers per hour. Due to quotas, flash was used at some times and not at other times.
Police and public prosecutors will not experience any problems with the increased influx, the Ministry of Justice assures. “Actions have been made at the regional processing centers of the federal police. In addition, a national traffic prosecutor’s office has now also been set up, for which recruitment is currently underway. This ensures that we are perfectly able to follow up on everything,” says De Lantsheer.
