Eddie Nketiah has changed his mind: the 23-year-old signed a new long-term contract with Arsenal FC on Saturday. The striker, whose original working paper would have expired at the end of the season, has long been considered a candidate for a change and has been associated with Borussia Mönchengladbach, among others. The homegrown player has been playing for the Gunners since he was 14 and will wear that number on his back from next season. Nketiah has scored 23 goals in 92 games for the Arsenal team to date.
“I am very pleased that Eddie is staying with us. He embodies what we are about and all the values of the club. We are very happy that he has extended his contract and now we have to get to work and develop the great talent and the person we have in him,” said coach Mikel Arteta.
“The foundation of this squad consists of young talents, especially those who have passed through our academy,” added Technical Director Edú Gaspar. Nketiah has “always shown that he has both the attitude and the ability to become a top player. The fact that he has signed a new contract is an important part of the squad planning for next season and we are all very happy about it.”
