“We were informed by Leo and his management that he would like to take the next step in his career at another club starting next season. I really regret that, because on the one hand I’m convinced that it would have been important for Leo’s development if he continued to play for us at least for the coming season, and on the other hand we’ve accepted the very good offer for a contract extension that was made before his injury last year We have made it more attractive for him two more times over the past few months,” explained Vienna’s Managing Director Zoran Barisic.

Rapids Barisic on Greiml-Korb: “Decision not just for sporting reasons”

The 51-year-old assumes “that the decision was not just for sporting reasons, but that’s probably how our football business is. In any case, I wish Leo Greiml that he will soon make a full recovery and regain his former level of performance. He has developed tremendously since joining us almost four years ago, made the best use of the opportunity he was given and was always a model professional, for whom I wish only the best for his future career.”

Greiml made the leap from the second team to the Rapid professionals in the summer of 2019 and has played 57 competitive games for them since then. In the current season he was one of the absolute regulars before a cruciate ligament rupture at the end of October last year put him out of action. Greiml is considered one of the greatest defensive talents in Austria and was on the way to becoming a national team player before his injury. Reiml had recently announced to the Austrian media that he wanted to “fully get back into it” by the summer preparations at the latest.
