Trade unions: “three prisoners in a cell of 8 square meters in Bruges”
In Bruges prison there are 500 cells and more than 800 prisoners. Due to overcrowding, three prisoners had to be put in a cell for the first time on Thursday. That says ACV representative Peter Millecam. “There is a bunk bed and someone is sleeping on the floor”.
There is also a shortage of chairs, cutlery and clothing. “Detainees wear oversized or torn clothing. Rags, so to speak”.
The unions fear that the situation in Bruges will escalate and demand solutions. “People are dumped in degrading conditions. This is unacceptable in a Western country in the 21st century,” said Millecam.
