Trade association does not expect food shortages – but oil is scarce

BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – The Vice President of the German Trade Association (HDE), Bjrn Fromm, does not expect supply bottlenecks in Germany despite the Ukraine war. “We don’t have to ration large, there are enough calories for the population,” Fromm said on Tuesday in the ZDF “Morgenmagazin”. Nobody should hoard food out of panic. “Buy only as much as you need right now, then there will be enough for everyone.”

When asked whether supermarkets should limit the sale of certain products that are currently in high demand, such as sunflower oil or flour, Fromm said: “That makes sense for the moment when people might buy more than they really need out of fear and panic.”

Despite the Russian export ban on grain, there will be no problem with the grain supply in Germany in the medium term, the HDE Vice President explained. Enough of it is produced and harvested in Germany. The situation is different for sunflower oil, the most important supplier of which is Ukraine. “It will be difficult for this special oil, sunflower oil, in the next few months,” said Fromm./vrb/DP/mis
