Zwevezele/WingeneA couple and their 5-year-old son from Wingene were injured in a traffic accident in the fog along the N50 in Zwevezele (Wingene) on Saturday evening. They were together on a tractor that overturned after being struck by a van.
Just after 6.15 pm Mariusz L. drove the tractor of his employer Jo Clarisse from dairy farm ‘t Hof Rozendale from Wingene van Egem (Pittem) towards Zwevezele. His wife and their son were also in his tractor. In the thick fog, near the Ravenschootsveldhoeve, the tractor was suddenly hit at the rear by a delivery van with a trailer, a Peugeot Partner that once served with the Liège fire brigade. The van scooped up the tractor like water, causing it to overturn and come to a stop on its side in the opposite direction of travel. The van ended up in the canal on the right side of the road. Both the three family members from the tractor and the man behind the wheel of the van were injured and had to be taken to hospital. They were not in mortal danger.
“It is not really clear to me how such a thing could have happened,” said Jo Clarisse. “Was the man in the van surprised by the tractor in the fog? It’s possible. But I am sure of one thing: that the tractor was well lit. No tractor goes out with me with a technical defect. Fortunately, Mariusz and his family were not seriously injured. For them it was an outing, together on the tractor. They had just dropped off a carrot cart and were on their way back.”
The accident left the roadway littered with glass and debris. The N50 remained locally closed in the vicinity of the Hille for a while.
