Toxicologist Jan Tytgat warns against ketamine, ‘the new party drug’: “You cannot dose if you just sniff some white powder and crystals”

Young people who experiment with party drugs are increasingly turning to ketamine, according to a study by VTM NEWS and Het Laatste Nieuws. Ketamine is actually an anesthetic used in medicine for surgery, especially in horses. But what exactly is the effect of ketamine on a partygoer? And why is it so much more dangerous than other drugs? Toxicologist Jan Tytgat (KU Leuven) explains and warns: “Medically it is a responsible and useful substance, but recreationally it is extremely dangerous.”
