Tournament on Crete | German beach handball players win World Cup gold for the first time

Germany’s beach handball players are world champions for the first time. The DHB selection prevailed in Heraklion on the Greek holiday island of Crete in a dramatic final against Spain, third in the European Championship, 2-0 (15:14, 22:20).

“Winning the world championship a year after the European championship is a fantastic success. I congratulate the team, coaches and everyone who made this gold medal possible,” said DHB President Andreas Michelmann. “This is a milestone for German beach handball.”

In both sets it was a draw after the regular ten minutes had elapsed, so that the golden goal had to decide in each case. Both times, the German women around the strong goalkeeper Katharina Filter had the better end for themselves and enthusiastically celebrated the World Cup triumph after Michelle Schäfer’s winning goal.
