Defending champion Angelique Kerber has successfully completed the interrupted first round match at the tennis tournament in Bad Homburg. Sabine Lisicki had previously celebrated a successful comeback.
The 34-year-old German 2018 Wimbledon champion beat Anastasia Gasanova from Russia 6-2, 6-2. The game had been stopped the night before when the score was 4:2 in the first set because the grass had become too wet and slippery. In the round of 16, Kerber meets the Italian Lucia Bronzetti.
For them, the Bad Homburg Open is the dress rehearsal before the Grand Slam start in Wimbledon from June 27th to July 10th. Last year she made it to the semi-finals in London after winning just outside of Frankfurt.
Former Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki had previously celebrated her first singles win in the main draw of a WTA tournament after her comeback. The 32-year-old won the first round match against Tamara Korpatsch 6: 4, 7: 6 (7: 5).
Lisicki proved especially in the final stages of the two sets against the world number 105. from Hamburg that she is playful and combative on the right path. “The feeling on the pitch was so good that it was worth coming back and bouncing back,” she said.
After a serious cruciate ligament injury and an injury break of one and a half years, Lisicki returned to the WTA tour in Berlin last week, but missed qualifying for the main draw. In Bad Homburg she got a wildcard and should have played against Olympic champion Belinda Bencic in the first match. The Swiss had to cancel. She injured her foot in the Berlin final against Ons Jabeur from Tunisia.
