Professional cyclist Remco Evenepoel has extended his lead in the 77th Tour of Spain with his second stage win.

The 22-year-old Belgian prevailed on the 18th stage after 192 kilometers from Trujillo up to the mountain finish in Alto de Piornal with a two-second advantage over the Spaniard Enric Mas. Third place went to Dutchman Robert Gesink, who was caught as a soloist on the last kilometer of the final climb.

In the battle for the overall leader’s red jersey, Evenepoel is now 2:07 minutes ahead of pursuer Mas. Third is the Spaniard Juan Ayuso Pesquera, already 5:14 minutes behind.

On Friday (September 9th, 2022) the riders have to tackle a 138.3-kilometer, moderately difficult section around Talavera de la Reina. The Vuelta ends next Sunday in Madrid.
