Tour de France: Simon Geschke conquers mountain jersey

A Luxembourger wins the first stage in the Alps – but a German veteran crowns his strong performance of the first week of the tour.

Luxembourgish professional cyclist Bob Jungels has won the first Alpine stage of the 109th Tour de France. The 29-year-old from Team AG2R Citröen prevailed after 192.9 km from Aigle to Chatel Les Portes du Soleil as a soloist ahead of the Spaniards Jonathan Castroviejo (Ineos Grenadiers) and Carlos Verona (Movistar).

Meanwhile, veteran Simon Geschke (Berlin/Cofidis) crowned his strong first tour week and stormed into the mountain jersey as the eighth German. “I died a few deaths in the last mountain classification, but I really wanted to take the chance,” said the 36-year-old: “You don’t often get into the situation of wearing a jersey on the tour.” Meanwhile, defending champion Tadej Pogacar confidently defended the yellow jersey.
