On the first Alpine stage of the Tour de France, escapee Bob Jungels took the day’s victory. Simon Geschke courageously conquers the dotted mountain jersey.
With an attack from a breakaway group before the last mountain, Bob Jungels clinched victory on Sunday (07/10/2022) on the 9th stage of the Tour de France. On the 193 kilometers from Aigle to Chatel Les Portes du Soleil, the Luxembourger kept his lead over his pursuers on the last climb. Second place went to Spaniard Jonathan Castroviejo (22 seconds back) ahead of his compatriot Carlos Verona (26 seconds back).
The overall leader Tadej Pogacar did not come under pressure on the first stretch of the Alps and confidently defended the yellow jersey in the first chasing group with his worst competitor Jonas Vingegaard on the rear wheel as fifth of the day.
Gifts with a strong presence
Man of the day from a German point of view was Simon Geschke. For a long time, the Cofidis professional was in front with a breakaway group, gained mountain point after mountain point and was able to be happy about the dotted mountain jersey as a reward at the finish with two points in the last evaluation.
“I died a few deaths in the last mountain classification,” said the 36-year-old on the Sportschau microphone: “But it was worth it.” Geschke is the eighth German who will wear the jersey of the best climber.
Vlasov loses more seconds
Alexander Vlasov had a hard day again. The weakened captain of the German team Bora-hansgrohe had to let the favorite field go in the last climb of the day and lost another 27 seconds to Pogacar – but remains 12th.
After the rest day on Monday, the 10th stage from Morzine Les Portes du Soleil to Megève continues on Tuesday over 148.1 kilometers.
