After the bitter 2-0 defeat at Chelsea FC, there is a mix of frustration and anger at BVB. Many Dortmunders then blamed the team of referees for the end of the Champions League.
Marco Reus and Co. attacked the Dutch referee Danny Makkelie after the end of the black and yellow premier class dreams and felt severely disadvantaged. Because after a questionable penalty kick from Kai Havertz, BVB was eliminated in the round of 16.
After two controversial decisions, the German international in the service of Chelsea ended the impressive Borussia series with ten wins in ten competitive games.
Referee Makkelie only gave the penalty after extensive video studies and then had it repeated after Havertz first hit the post.
BVB pissed off at referee Makkelie
“The penalty plus the repetition, that’s a real scandal. I don’t need a rule keeper either. There are personalities for such situations. Makkelie is a very, very arrogant person,” scolded BVB advisor Matthias Sammer after the final whistle on “Amazon Prime Video”.
Midfielder Emre Can, who could hardly contain himself on the TV microphone, saw things similarly.
“How can he give a second penalty, I just don’t understand it. He hits the post, that’s it,” the international was annoyed at the referee: “He was arrogant the whole game. We still played a decent game. […] We don’t have to be ashamed. We lost undeservedly because of the referee. He might be afraid of the fans, in which case UEFA should send another referee. That hurts extremely.”
