From November 18, 2025 to February 28, 2026, Pineapple Park in the Old Parcel Post Hall in Munich is showing the exhibition “A Day With David Bowie” – a series of black and white photographs by the Austrian photographer Christine de Grancy, who accompanied the musician for a day in 1994. The photographs, never shown publicly, offer a rare, intimate look at the person behind the fictional character.

De Grancy met Bowie at the Art Brut Center Gugging, a place famous for its proximity to outsider art. There she met not the pop chameleon, but a thoughtful, almost silent observer. The photos show Bowie not as a performer, but as a listener.

The visit to Gugging later inspired Bowie to write his album “Outside” (1995), a dark examination of art, identity and decay. The fact that the recordings can now be seen in Munich gives them the character of a silent reverberation. It is a portrait of a musician suspended between worlds.

Christine de Grancy (born in Graz), who died in 2025, was known for her humanistic photography, in which she portrayed people in their living spaces with empathy and precision. Her works – from actresses at the Burgtheater to Iranian nomads – tell of dignity, vulnerability and closeness.

De Grancy saw photography as a form of listening. Two related artistic spirits meet in the pictures from Gugging.
