Tottenham’s Harry Kane between record drought and flood in front of goal

Last CL goal 2019

Actually, Harry Kane cannot complain about a lack of goals at the moment. The star striker has scored in his last four league games with Tottenham. A personal best, a flood of goals that the 29-year-old had already experienced five times in his Premier League career. For the first time in 2015 and most recently last spring, he had a hit streak in four consecutive league games. Accordingly, the national player tends to focus on the other side of the coin. In the Champions League, Kane also set a personal record – a negative one.

‘Drought’ is the common English footballing word for what Kane is going through in the Champions League. This season he has not yet scored a goal in the tournament, although the opponents, Eintracht Frankfurt, Sporting Lisbon and Olympique Marseille, cannot even be sorted into the upper shelf of the “premier class”. The goalgetter hopes to improve against SBU on Wednesday evening and has to admit to an unprecedented “drought”.

Kane with a record goalless in the Champions League – turn against Frankfurt?

Three games without a goal doesn’t usually sound too dramatic unless your name is Harry Kane. The London native has never gone so long without scoring in the Champions League. What’s more, Tottenham haven’t featured in elite competition at all for the last two seasons. His last Champions League game to score dates back to the pre-preseason group stage. It’s been three dry years. “I’m disappointed that I haven’t been on the top scorers list yet, so I hope I can turn that around,” Kane said ahead of the match against Frankfurt. Last week’s first leg ended goalless.

But Kane’s (and Tottenham’s) problem isn’t just goal tally. In twelve attempts this Champions League season, the striker has only managed two shots on goal. Spurs were only able to score thanks to Richarlison, who scored twice against Marseille. As of now, getting through Group D is going to be a close race. “We talked about the importance of winning and making our mark on the group,” Kane said. For better or for worse, he himself has to do it against Eintracht the way he does in the league.
