The market research institute GfK Entertainment has published new information on the current music market in Germany. After the regular album and single charts for the first half of 2023, GfK now shares the 20 best-selling vinyl albums of July. The result: rock is currently more popular than rap, at least in this medium.
The first place of the best-selling records in Germany is not even new. Because the debut album “Opel-Gang” by Die Toten Hosen got hold of it. In keeping with the band’s 40th anniversary, the Düsseldorf-based company released a deluxe edition of their debut work, which apparently still enjoys great popularity.
It is followed by Apache 207’s “Gartenstadt” in second place. What is striking about the current vinyl charts is that almost half of the top 10 are German-speaking musicians. In addition to the Hosen and Apache 207, Danger Dan (“That’s all covered by the freedom of art,” sixth place) and Silbermond (“Auf Auf,” seventh place) also made it into the top ten in the ranking.
Ex-One Direction singer Niall Horan (“The Show”) is the first English-speaking musician to appear in third place. Fourth place went to the Foo Fighters, who released their first LP since the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins with “But Here We Are”. Another great of the rock genre is Pink Floyd founding member Roger Waters with “The Lockdown Sessions” at number 15.
Also in the top 20: UK rapper Little Simz with “No Thank You” (tenth place) and US newcomer Gracie Abrams with her debut album “Good Riddance” (15th place).
GfK Entertainment regularly determines the German music charts for the Bundesverband der Musikindustrie eV – the data collection is based on the sales and usage data of 2,800 retailers.
