‘Total mismatch with Humberto Tan!’

You can never really trust celebrities who deny that they have a crush on each other. Marieke Elsinga also admits now, five years later, that she had no click with Humberto Tan at RTL Late Night.

Five years ago, Marieke Elsinga worked intensively for one season with Humberto Tan in his then talk show RTL Late Night. At the time, she succeeded Luuk Ikink, who had a column in the program for years. She didn’t like it. “There were also quite a lot of prescribed jokes and I found that very difficult.”

Hassle in the workplace

It is the low point of Marieke’s career. “I think I have to talk and be myself and then you can be a bit quick now and then or be funny now and then, but not a written joke and I noticed that I found that difficult. It was a bit forced,” she says in the The Broadcast Podcast

And what about the rumors that she couldn’t get through with Humberto? So they turn out to be correct. “I understand where the rumors are coming from. Especially now that I look back on it in retrospect: I’m just a completely different person than Luuk. Luuk and Humberto started that program together and they were so complementary to each other.”

Humberto irritated

Marieke’s sauce was not to Humberto’s taste. “What I do and what I think also makes me unique or makes myself and perhaps also makes good, is that I make contact very quickly, so also with that table where Humberto sat with his guests. I would ping-pong from my bar to that table and hope someone would say something back.”

She continues: “That actually made my sauce and that’s just not the style that Humberto wanted from me. There was just a mismatch. He has also mentioned that to me. He had the feeling: ‘I have already stated that many times’, I had the feeling that he did not actually see me or did not understand me well…”

Huge mismatch

That enormous mismatch splashed off the screen, according to Marieke. “We miscommunicated and you could feel that in those shows. I also felt that then or got it back from someone, like: ‘Hey, I feel when I look that there is cold between you.’”

Is that why she stopped? “It has not been a reason for me to stop. That was really my own choice, but I understand that a viewer has seen that or a media maker.”

Prefer with Beau

Marieke also made the same section for a summer under the direction of Beau van Erven Dorens. That was much better. “I also did that program with Beau for a few months and we have much more of the same frequency, but that doesn’t say anything about me or Humberto as people.”

That’s just how it goes, explains Marieke. “Sometimes you speak more of the same language. Well, come on.”
