Toro Y Moi: “Mahal” (Review & Stream)

A decade, all music: Since Chaz Bundick aka Chaz Bear aka Toro Y Moi invented the chillwave genre in 2009, he’s played his way through the styles once. Sixties rock, psychedelia, electro, house and cutting-edge R&B: Bear’s musical talent is so elastic that it fits in anywhere.

Bear’s musical talent is so elastic that it fits in anywhere

The new effort takes the psychedelic rock of “What For?” (2015) and mixes it with a hip-hop-informed space-funk and an art post-rock. “The Medium” has the trippy sounds of King Gizzard, “Magazine” could be a Beck single, the ultra-cool – and fun – funk of “Postman” and “The Loop” are reminiscent of Sly & The Family Stone. The basis of this music is funk and a deeply relaxed groove. Fabulous!
