Topi Rönni was convicted of rape – the NHL club made its decision

The NHL club reacted to the verdict late Tuesday evening Finnish time.

Hockey’s NHL club, the Canadian Calgary Flames, announced its withdrawal Rönnin’s top player rights.

The Helsinki District Court sentenced Rönni, 19, on Tuesday for rape committed as a young person. He received a one-year suspended prison sentence. The judgment is not binding.

The Flames reserved Rönni’s player rights for themselves in the summer 2022 booking event in the second round at booking round 59.

Rönni had not signed a contract with the Flames. Before the verdict, Rönni had a player contract with SM league Tappara, but Tappara canceled the contract.

Rönni commented on the issue in Tappara’s press release.

– Almost three years have passed since the incident and this time has been extremely difficult for everyone involved. The publicity surrounding the case has felt overwhelming and has touched not only myself but also my family and loved ones, Rönni said.

– Involuntarily, the matter has also been related to the Tappara community, as well as the Calgary Flames, who booked me, and many others. I want to apologize for this to everyone involved.
