Zwarthoed: “At RKAV Volendam he formed a selection with only Volendam boys. He now wanted to do that with all Purmerend football players. So that a selection would be created where everyone would go through fire for each other.”
One of the boys from Purmerend is Rowin Mol. Last season, as captain, he was an extension of Smit. “He is quite relaxed in dealing with him. However, he demands a certain level of training. This resulted in very tough training sessions. Sometimes we left the training field crawling, so to speak.”
Volendam humor
“You can say that he was leading in winning the title due to his vision and way of training,” said Mol. The 31-year-old footballer could often laugh at Smit, although he did not always understand the humor. “Sometimes he talks vulgar Volendams and then he breaks down over his own jokes. The only one who understands him is Ben Zwarthoed.”
Zwarthoed: “Volendam people have a dry sense of humor. Berry and I have a one-two punch. For others the penny drops a little later, doesn’t it. Hahaha!”
