Joseph Kosinski’s Top Gun: Maverick could be on the way to an Oscar nomination. The critically acclaimed sequel to the 1980s classic has made a splash at the box office.
The film has also won at the previous award ceremonies, which is another indication of a possible nomination. This is how the production as the National Board of Review announced on Thursday (December 08), Best Picture and Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography. The award ceremony will take place on January 8th in New York.
An Oscar for Top Gun: Maverick?
The 2023 Oscar nominations are set to be announced on January 24, with the 95th ceremony taking place on March 12 in Los Angeles. If Top Gun: Maverick picks up more awards before then, it could bode well for a nomination in the top category, Best Picture, to come. Chances are good for lead actor Tom Cruise. He too could be nominated.
The sequel was an overwhelming success with both critics and audiences. The film will also be released on Paramount+, just in time for the holidays, where it will almost certainly break streaming records. Our review of the film is here.
For everyone who has lived behind the moon so far, here is the trailer:
A cake by Tom Cruise for Glen Powell
Of course, the film’s biggest hit so far has been Glen Powell’s entry into the coveted Tom Cruise Christmas cake list. Should it not be an Oscar, at least the legendary white chocolate and coconut cake is secured in an ornate box. We met the “Top Gun: Maverick” cast virtually, click here for the interview.
