For the second day in a row, more than 2,000 people stayed overnight at the registration center in Ter Apel, reports the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA). On the night from Saturday to Sunday the number of people was 2021, the night before there were 2002.
The exceedance means that COA must pay a penalty of 15,000 euros to the municipality of Westerwolde, where the center is located. Sunday marks the fourth time that the permitted maximum has been violated.
Before Saturday, the number of people in Ter Apel had remained below 2,000 for fourteen days in a row.
