The housing shortage on Texel appears to be a hot topic in the run-up to the municipal elections. Many Texel residents consider this to be the problem that the municipality should tackle, according to research by Kieskompas and NH Nieuws. On the island, where the supply is already low, too little is being built for a good flow in the housing market.
Dennis Eelman has been a real estate agent on Texel for years and has noticed for some time that the demand on Texel is greater than the supply. According to him, construction is underway, but not nearly enough. There are also no alternative options. “If you work in Alkmaar, you can draw a large circle around Alkmaar and you can live there. That is not possible on Texel,” says Eelman.
aging
An aging population could be the cause of this problem. In his field of work, Eelman notices that there are a lot of seniors who would like to leave their single-family or detached house, but there are too few or even no senior or single-storey homes. “The result is that they are obliged to continue to live at home and to a lesser extent put their home for sale.”
According to Eelman, too little account is taken of seniors. For example, an apartment complex was built in Den Burg, but it was already unsuitable for the elderly in advance. “The problem is that it doesn’t have an elevator,” Dennis said.
Detached houses
Eelman has his own ideas about a possible solution to this problem. According to the broker, it would be an option to focus more on detached houses. “Then maybe if you build fewer homes, you can create a lot more relocation movements.”
