Tonight to the main train station and helping refugees from Ukraine

On Wednesday, more than 1,000 Ukrainians who fled Putin’s war of aggression arrive at the main train station in Berlin.

Berlin is preparing for up to 20,000 refugees who will come to the capital from Ukraine after the Putin invasion. More than 1,000 people seeking protection are expected on Wednesday.

Not everyone has a place to stay right away. Therefore, the non-profit online portal #accommodation-ukraine brought to life. Here Berlin can offer overnight accommodation for people fleeing the Ukraine. But the events of the last few hours have already created an emergency.

At 5:30 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., special trains with Ukrainians are expected at the main station. The initiative therefore calls for Berliners who want to help to come directly to the main train station to offer a free guest room, bedroom or similar.

“If you can, please go to the reception center in the 1st basement of Berlin Central Station (signposted)”, the message says. “It is best to bring a large sign with you, on which you can clearly write how many people you can offer accommodation for and for what period of time. The railways and the organization Karuna eG and other organizations will provide support on site.”

More people are expected to arrive in the next few days, so that (uncomplicated) help is still needed. In this context, #accommodation-ukraine wants to mediate unbureaucratically, so that the effort for helping hands remains as low as possible.
