Toni Söderholm was hired as the head coach of SC Bern, which plays in the Swiss premier league, in mid-November.
Earlier at the beginning of the month, Bern fired its head coach at the time For Johan Lundeskog. At the time, Bern was sixth in the series.
The game movement of the club management received criticism from the players of Bern, because Lundeskog was considered a coach among the players.
The team’s Swiss defender Ramon Untersander, 31, wondered three weeks ago about the timing of the coach change.
– We are in sixth place, five points from third place. Do we need to be first, he wondered then.
Söderholm, 44, served as the head coach of the German national ice hockey team before jumping to become the commander of the top club.
Bern has played four matches under Söderholm, of which it has won one. The team is currently eighth in the league.
– We got a good coach. Toni is calm and thoughtful. I think his vision of how we should play and his coaching is very good. I am very sure that he will take us forward, Untersander praised Söderholm.
Söderholm is not the only Finnish coach in Bern’s recent history. Kari Jalonen served as the team’s head coach in the 2016–2020 seasons and led the club to two Swiss championships.
Untersander played under Jalonen and was excited to compare the two Finnish coaches.
– Toni reminds me a bit of Kari Jalos. You can say he belongs to the same school. It’s exciting and kind of funny to see certain similarities.
Bern will face Langnau in their next match.
