Real Madrid have secured the Spanish Supercopa. Los Blancos defeated Athletic Bilbao in the final of the competition, which was held in Saudi Arabia. Toni Kroos is thus celebrating another milestone.
DFB World Champion Toni Kroos has won his 15th title with Real Madrid. In the final of the Supercopa in Saudi Arabia, the Spanish record champions won 2-0 (1-0) against Athletic Bilbao. It was the twelfth triumph in the competition for Los Blancos, who beat arch-rivals FC Barcelona 3-2 after extra time in the semifinals.
Alaba celebrates his first trophy in a Real jersey
Vice world champion Luka Modric (38th) and world champion Karim Benzema (52nd, penalty after video evidence) scored the goals for Real. Kroos, who had already won the Supercopa in 2018 and 2020, played through, as did ex-Munich David Alaba, who won his first title with the royal team. Eder Militao saw the red card shortly before the end (87th).
The Supercopa, introduced in 1982, has been played in Saudi Arabia since 2020. Financial reasons are the main reason behind Riyadh as the venue. The desert state is paying around 40 million euros to the Spanish football association RFEF for the tournament, and a total of 120 million should flow for three events from 2020 to 2022 – but last year the Supercopa was held in Spain due to the corona pandemic.
