No question, with their agitprop songs, which often sound like slogans, Ton Steine Scherben have not only described the need to set off in turbulent times. They also created timeless classics of committed, socially critical rock music that found numerous imitators.

In addition to “Monarchy and Everyday Life”, “Mensch-Maschine” and “Neu!”, the double album “Keine Macht für Kein” is one of the most formative albums in German pop music history. Why? ROLLING STONE author Ernst Hofacker: “They spoke the language of the streets, turned it into rock poetry and actually lived the lives of their clientele, the squatters, anarchists and left-wing romantics of the post-APO era.”

Their second album, a double album, contained numerous anthems such as “Step by step into paradise”, “Come sleep with me” or the angry title track written by Rio Reiser.

50 years old and still relevant? Eleven comic artists asked themselves this question and each dealt intensively with one piece. The contributions by Kathrin Klingner (“We have to get out of here”), Nicolas Mahler (“After work”), Bianca Schaalburg (“We’ll win the last battle”), Sheree Domingo/Rahel Suesskind (“Paul Panzers Blues”), Reinhard Kleist (“ Manhunters”), Mia Oberländer (“Alone they make you one”), Sascha Hommer (“Step by step into paradise”), Daniela Heller (“The dream is over”), Jan Soeken (“Mensch Meier”), 18Metzger ( “Rauch-Haus-Song”), Ulli Lust (“No power for nobody”) and Michael Jordan (“Come on, sleep with me”) are fascinating free interpretations that combine the combative and tender, the serious and the funny in the lyrics the clay catches stones shards wonderfully.

With the comic by star illustrator and comic musician biographer Reinhard Kleist (“Starman – David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust Years”), ROLLING STONE presents an excerpt from “No Power for Nobody: A Ton Steine Scherben Songcomic” (Ventil Verlag, 25 euros).
