The Menkeweer cemetery, just north of Onderdendam, has been restored. The owner of the Noorderzijlvest water board has restored and replaced twenty gravestones.

Earlier this year, hawthorn and stinzen plants were planted to create more privacy. The water board is in consultation with residents of Onderdendam about a scattering field on this archaeological national monument.

First chairman of the water board

Noorderzijlvest owns the cemetery. She became it in 1970 (then still the Hunsingo water board) because she felt ‘morally obliged’ to keep the grave of her first chairman Adriaan Jan van Roijen in good condition. There are 56 graves in the cemetery.
