Waes, known for the series Undercover, caused a single-vehicle accident in November 2024 when he got behind the wheel while drinking too much.
The campaign ‘There are no excuses’ includes a video in which Waes can also be seen. The video first shows images of people who want to drive while drinking and then of car wrecks that have been involved in an accident. The last photo concerns Waes’ green Porsche, with which the presenter collided with an arrow car in the Kennedy tunnel in Antwerp last year. “I think my excuse was: ‘I’ll get there,’” he says in the video.
Travel program Tom Waes scores much lower in the Netherlands after an accident
Waes had a blood alcohol level of 2.44 at the time of his traffic accident. Far above the limit of 0.5 per mille permitted in Belgium, writes the VRT. In May this year, the presenter was sentenced to a driving ban of 3 months, an alcolock of one year, a fine and a resit of his driving tests.
According to the VRT, at least 10 traffic accidents occur every day in Belgium due to alcohol or illegal drugs, often resulting in serious injuries and sometimes fatalities. Traffic institute Vias investigated that almost one in five Belgian drivers admits to driving with possibly too much alcohol in their blood at least once a month.
