The fairy tale by Tom van Weert from Sint-Michielsgestel will be continued. After a strong season in which the former striker of FC Den Bosch became top scorer in the Greek league, Van Weert has forced a dream transfer. The Greek top team AEK Athens confirmed the arrival of the 32-year-old striker last Thursday.
Van Weert had known for some time that he was on the wish list of the top club from the Greek capital. “But I also knew that there were several names on the list, including a player who is internationally known.” Only at the end of the transfer window did AEK report definitively to the striker. “It makes it even better that the long wait has finally paid off,” he says.
“When AEK Athens made an offer, I already knew I was going for it.”
When AEK’s interest became concrete, Van Weert did not hesitate for a moment. “There were several options throughout the transfer summer, but this was my favorite. If AEK Athens made an offer, I already knew that I would go for it.”
Last season, Van Weert made the switch from the Danish Aalborg to the Greek middle engine Volos NFC. In his first season, he immediately got the hang of it. He was crowned the league’s top scorer. “The Greek league is known for defensive football, so it is not so easy to get many goals here,” Van Weert previously told Omroep Brabant.
“Nice to see that it has also been noticed in the Netherlands.”
His dream transfer generated ‘a bizarre number’ of reactions, says Van Weert. “You really notice that you enter a big club. In any case, hundreds of messages from the supporters and new followers on Instagram.” Players he played with ten years ago congratulated the experienced striker: “It is nice to see that it has also been noticed in the Netherlands,” says Van Weert.
Via FC Den Bosch, Excelsior, FC Groningen, Aalborg and Volos, the attacker will play at the biggest club of his career this season. “Going along in professional football for thirteen years and then still playing at such a top club makes me very proud”, concludes de Brabander.
