An American who made a name for himself in bodybuilding in the 70s and 80s Tom Platz doesn’t seem to appreciate the current state of the species.
Supporters of the golden age of bodybuilding, the 50s and 70s, in particular, have long criticized the sport for the fact that the use of anabolic steroids and the appreciation of the amount of muscle mass have gone too far.
According to the Generation Iron website, Platz continues to criticize with his recent comments. Platz focuses his reviews on the biggest competitions in bodybuilding and fitness sports, the Olympics and the Arnold Classic.
– I think the Olympia has lost its identity and the Arnold Classic its reputation, Platz said according to Generation Iron.
Addressing the American audience in particular, Platz urged them to turn their eyes to Mr. America. The competition in question was organized for the first time already in 1939, disappeared completely at the turn of the 21st century and is now making a new appearance.
Generation Iron is the media partner of the Mr. America competition. According to Generation Iron, Mr. America is committed to the WADA doping testing standards.
– Back then Mr. America was not just a bodybuilding competition. You had to be self-confident, have good skin, good hair and good language skills. Was supposed to represent American manhood. You had to be a perfect man – not only physically but also mentally, Platz said.
Platz points out that many people think that in bodybuilding you should only aim for winning the Mr. Olympia. It means a huge amount of doping substances and muscle mass.
– Bodybuilding is so much more than a good body and stretching.
Platz himself was known for his massive leg muscles during his career.
The winner of the 1953 Mr. America contest, Bill Pearl, looked very different from today’s bodybuilders.
The 2021 Mr. America title was won by Corey Brown, who, with his muscles, would look like a little guy next to the biggest bodybuilders.
