The top actress gave a speech at the school’s graduation ceremony on Thursday. The actor joked that he received his new honor “without working a day, without spending any time in classes and without even going to the library.”

Hanks also encouraged students to stand up to people’s indifference.

– Indifference turns citizens into wage slaves, employed by tyrants and cynics who forbid differences of opinion and ban art, dialogue and books, Hanks said in his speech.

Hanks said that each graduate has a choice to make: they can either become supporters of freedom, opponents of it, or people who don’t care.

– Only the first works for a more complete community, an undivided nation. Others are in the way.

Hanks received a volleyball decorated with the Harvard text as a gift from Harvard University. The ball is a reference to Hanks’ 2000 hit movie Cast Away – Gone with the Wind.

Harvard announced in March that Hanks would be the valedictorian at the graduation ceremony. The head of the university Larry Bacow justified the choice by the fact that Hanks has “promoted the country’s national culture and expanded the ability to appreciate previously unexplored stories”.

Tom Hanks is known for movies, among other things Forrest Gump, Save Private Ryan, Toy Story and Big. He has won several Oscar, Emmy and Golden Globe awards in his career. He has also received, among other things, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, he has been appointed a Knight of the French Legion of Honor and he has received honorary citizenship of Greece.

Hanks once studied at the University of Sacramento. However, theater work took the man away, and the actor never graduated. Time named him to the list of the ten most famous college dropouts in 2010.
