Today’s program: appoint a scout and new action on Dam Square

This is on the program today: appoint a scout and new action on Dam Square

On the second day after the House of Representatives elections, in which Geert Wilders’ PVV became by far the largest with 37 seats, the first steps are being taken towards a new cabinet. At 10.30 am, Chamber President Vera Bergkamp (D66) will receive the party leaders of all political parties represented in parliament. They will appoint a scout, who will probably be nominated by Wilders.

This explorer will investigate which coalitions are possible based on the election results. After the exploration, the information phase begins, in which the real negotiations between parties begin. If this leads to a possible coalition, the formation can start.

Based on the result, a coalition of PVV, VVD, NSC and BBB is the most obvious choice. However, the question is whether all three of the latter parties are prepared to work with the PVV. If negotiations go well on Friday, the name of the scout will be announced that same day. That person can then also provide an explanation of the assignment he or she has been given.

The cabinet meeting of the current outgoing cabinet will also take place on Friday. This will also include discussions about the election results and what this means for the tasks that the outgoing cabinet can still perform.

Action on Dam Square
A major solidarity action is planned on Friday afternoon on Dam Square in Amsterdam, organized by Milieudefensie, PAX for Peace, Amnesty International, Greenpeace, Vluchtelingenwerk Nederland, among others. COC Netherlands, Extinction Rebellion and Transgender Netwerk NL are also represented. ‘Together for Solidarity’ will focus on tolerance, protection of the rule of law and “a Netherlands for everyone”. Amsterdam factions of PvdA, GroenLinks, Volt, SP, D66 and Party for the Animals are also participating in the action. On Thursday there were also solidarity actions in Amsterdam, Utrecht and other cities in response to the PVV’s election win.
