Peaky Blinders – the full story -documentary follows the rise and fall of Britain’s first gang movement. The two-part series focuses on the initial stages of the creation of a criminal group.

At the beginning of the documentary, it is told where it all started.

In 1890, an obscure incident occurred that revealed a new phenomenon.

An ordinary, harmless and sober man George Eastwood went to a pub to drink ginger beer when three men started insulting him. Eastwood decided to go home.

Soon he heard a shout telling him to be rocked.

The man was brutally beaten and hospitalized for three weeks.

It was after this abuse that the term Peaky Blinders was first coined.

Real peaky blinders became pioneers of organized crime in the 1920s. Gangs appeared on the street 50 years earlier in the 1870s.

The first gangs didn’t care about money, they fought for status in the streets. Their birth changed cities permanently.

Birmingham’s side streets, where racism and poverty were rampant, served as a breeding ground for the gangs.

For example, the Irish were insulted as cannibals.

The criminal group has also been made into a popular Netflix series, which is loosely based on true historical events.

Scriptwriter Steven Knight tells in the documentary what inspired him to write the drama series. He tells stories about peaky blinders from his father.

At the age of 8, Knight’s father was tasked by his own father to deliver a message to a criminal gang.

– My father was terrified. Inside were eight impeccably stylish men and a table full of coins – in a place where no one had any money. The men drank beer and whiskey from jam cans. That money was not wasted on glasses. Every penny was spent on the look.
