Benecken: “For me it’s above all gratitude”
Like his luge partner, the decision was not easy for Sascha Benecken from the Suhl luge team, but the time was right. He could hardly sleep last night, especially since a doping control was pending on Monday morning.
A familiar sight for a long time, but now a thing of the past: Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken celebrate in the doubles competition.
“Of the 33 years of my life, I have dedicated 24 to tobogganing. For me, it is above all the gratitude to be able to end my career with a crowning conclusion in Oberhof, when we became world champions again at the beginning of this year,” emphasized Benecken and continued: “This achievement will feel wonderful for the rest of my life.”
Duo Eggert/Benecken hoarded titles – the Thuringians were denied Olympic gold
The achievements of the duo are impressive. Since the 2010/11 winter sports season, Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken have been racing through the ice channels and have been able to string success after success. In addition to six overall World Cup victories, the Thuringians won eleven world championship titles (doubles + team relay), six times they were at the top of the podium at European championships (doubles + team relay).
At the Olympic Games, however, they were denied the really big hit. In 2018 in Pyeongchang they made it to third place, four years later in Beijing they won silver together.
