Tobias Schweinsteiger and Alexander Nouri traded at VfL Osnabrück

Coach search in Osnabrück

VfL Osnabrück was caught off guard by Daniel Scherning’s short-term move to the higher-class Arminia from Bielefeld last week. In game one under interim coach Tim Danneberg, the purple-whites did not get past a 1-1 draw at Wehen Wiesbaden, and with a meager five points from five games in the 3rd division they only ranked 13th in the table – too little for the claims of the traditional Lower Saxony club, in which the search for a successor to Scherning for the coaching bench is in full swing. According to media reports, Tobias Schweinsteiger, currently assistant coach at 1. FC Nürnberg, was among the personal details traded.

Reports on Schweinsteiger include the “New Osnabrück newspaper‘ and the ‘picture“-Newspaper. Osnabrück’s sports director Amir Shapourzadeh, however, kept a low profile when asked by the latter about personal details: “We are still in the identification phase and are meeting with several candidates. We have no time pressure. It’s possible that we’ll make a decision this week, or even later.” Schweinsteiger, who switched from Hamburger SV to the club in the summer of 2020, only extended his expiring contract with the Franconians in the spring.

According to reports, the 40-year-old has been toying with his first post as head coach for some time. In the “NOZ” Nuremberg’s sports director Dieter Hecking announced that he wanted to comment on the personnel at the earliest as soon as someone specifically approached him – so there does not seem to have been any official talks with the Franconians yet.

In addition to Schweinsteiger: Nouri is also traded at VfL Osnabrück

In the TM community, too, Schweinsteiger’s personal details are viewed with caution. “I find his profile interesting: a mixture of ambition, talent and also professional experience with his assistant coach positions at HSV and now in Nuremberg. My only concern: he will probably need his time to gain a foothold. Right now we need ‘immediate help’,” writes TM user “merzisch”, for example, who would prefer “a solution with a more experienced coach in professional football” in principle.

In addition to Schweinsteiger, numerous names have recently been associated with VfL, the most prominent person among potential candidates being ex-Werder and Hertha coach Alexander Nouri. The 43-year-old played professionally in Osnabrück between 2004 and 2008 and during this time contributed 14 goals in 93 games for Lower Saxony. While Patrick Glöckner (most recently Waldhof Mannheim) should no longer be an issue according to “NOZ”, the names Guerino Capretti (most recently Dynamo Dresden), Carsten Rump (SV Rödinghausen), Benedetto Muzzicato (most recently Viktoria Berlin), Rüdiger Ziehl (most recently TSV Havelse) as well as Jan Zimmermann (last Hannover 96) and Mark Zimmermann (1. FC Köln II) are still in the draw.
