“To the Bak in the Bin” on Alcatraz

The prisons and detention centers are looking for a lot of new blood, not only for the traditional function of security assistant (jailer in popular speech), but also jobs as detention counselor, social assistant, nurse and psychologist have vacancies.

From Quickenborne: “Correct Profiles on Alcatraz”

Federal Minister for Justice Vincent Van Quickenborne explains: “There is a shortage on the labor market. Not only companies are looking for suitable candidates for their vacancies, this is also the case with Justice. That is why, for the first time, we have drastically accelerated the recruitment procedures and we are much more actively looking for the right people. We have to do that in the right place. I am sure that we will find those candidates par excellence among the metal fans. I know the metal public well: they are people who want to contribute to a better society and help their fellow man. Those are exactly the profiles we are looking for. A lot of festival goers will not only find a weekend full of metal fun at Alcatraz, but also a new calling to get involved in the bin.”

Search for detention counselors

A modern prison policy should provide even more tailor-made guidance to promote reintegration of detainees and avoid recidivism. Within the broad range of duties of the over-extended prison staff, there is insufficient space for meaningful detention, working on reintegration and avoiding recidivism. It was therefore decided to split these tasks into two functions, with security assistants on the one hand and detention supervisors on the other.

The security assistant is mainly responsible for surveillance, control and observation to ensure the general safety of everyone inside the prison. The detention counselor, on the other hand, has the specific task of guiding detainees from day 1 to their final return to society.

Many other prisons are also looking for additional security guards, social workers, nurses and psychologists. These include vacancies in the prisons of Antwerp, Beveren, Bruges, Ghent, Leuven Hulp, Leuven Central, Hoogstraten, Mechelen, Hasselt, Merksplas, Turnhout and Oud-Dendermonde.
