A hockey legend Teemu Selänne enjoyed the atmosphere of playing in the Bermuda tournament at the Kalastajatorpa Tennis Club over the weekend. He told Iltalehte about his future plans, which include building a new luxury home in California.
Selänte’s Coto de Cazan home in California was already sold a year and a half ago. Soon, a new, even better dream home will be built near the former home.
– A year and a half ago, the old home was sold and a plot of land five minutes away was bought. When we go back in the fall, we will start building our dream home. We are excited, says Selänne.

– It has a big heart, which means that the area where the most people are would be big. We would all be in it, and there are no little rooms where everyone can hide. That space could be a bar, he plans.
– The home should have a lot of large windows and light. There are bedrooms for everyone and there is a movie room in the house, Selänne describes.
According to Selänte, it is common for rooms in American homes to be reserved for representation only.
– We don’t get something like that in our house, he taps.

“I don’t know the exact amount”
The dream home will also have a cool swimming pool area, which will make use of a large 5,000 square meter plot.
– Yes, there will be a tennis court and a Finnish sauna and, of course, a swimming pool. The yard is just the size you need. Children are Veera except in the world, so 5000 square meters is just right. It has a tennis court, and other normal things. There is work to be done in a yard that is too big, he states.
When Seläntee is asked what kind of price tag he has envisioned for the house project, the answer is amused laughter.
– It does matter, of course you have to keep your wits about you. I don’t know the exact amount, he says and notes that millions are still being talked about.
The hockey legend says with a twinkle in his eye that he is not going to give Sirpa’s wife a free hand when it comes to the interior.
– I’m really going to intervene! We have pretty similar tastes. We built Kirkkonumme Hilaa our Finnish dream home, and at least we didn’t get into a fight, he grins.
– We are on the same wavelength, but you can’t just give the whole line, you have to have a little control.
“We’re making a dog room”
Sirpa Selänne, who watched the Bermuda tournament with her daughter Veera, said that she hoped the interior of the new luxury home would be light.
– That home will be quite similar to the Hilan home that we built twenty years ago here in Finland. Now we get to make a little bit bigger, since the building permits in America don’t come so quickly with square meters. We get to make a home that looks like ourselves, the kind we’ve been thinking about for years, he rejoices.
– We gave this task to the architect. It will be modern. Light colors and some contrasts, a little black and gray.
The couple has six dogs, so furry paws are already taken into account during the house construction phase: a separate room is made for the dogs.
– If we have a guest who is afraid of dogs, we make a comfortable room for the dogs, where they can stay during the visit and get out through the dog door to the fenced area. Of course, they travel with us all the time, but it’s good to be prepared for such special situations.
– They are big dogs, so the materials in the home must also be dog-friendly.

According to Sirpa Selänte, the family’s life will continue to be centered in California due to the successful restaurant business. They plan to expand the business with a couple of new restaurants.
– However, we often come to visit, because my 87-year-old mother is here. I try to spend time with him as often as possible. Teemunk’s father is 86 years old. It is important to see the parents as often as possible. It doesn’t matter to me where I live, business affects it the most, Sirpa sums up.
The ambitious project also has a tight schedule.
– If we can build this in the fall, it would take a year and a half to be ready. If the work starts in October, our dream would be to be able to move in by Christmas next year, says Teemu Selänne.
